The Importance of Dramatic Play

I know many of us don't have time or space for dramatic play in the classroom anymore but it is still so important to the development of early learners.  There is so much to be said for developing relationships, sharing, playing together and having meaningful conversations within our classrooms. These skills need to be developed more so now than ever before since we have so much technology in every aspect of our lives.  Children need to play, use their imaginations and have time to interact with one another.

As students play they are gaining a very important skill set that helps them develop many parts of the brain that are not measured by an assessment.  These skills are used to help develop the whole child.   While children are playing they are using communication and language skills as well as social, cognitive and emotional skills.

The Dramatic Play Environment
The dramatic play area should be inviting for students.  Including items in the area that give an authentic feel is also encouraged.   The center should also include activities and supplies that encourage the students to use literacy skills.  Below are pictures of what I used for a vet clinic. Simple items that were donated or purchased at the dollar store.  The kids had a great time pretending to be the receptionist, vet and the owner bringing their pet to the clinic. The receptionist took down the information about the pet that was brought in and the doctor and the assistant had to complete a form to give back to owner about the pet. These two tasks encouraged students to use literacy and communication skills.

What a fun learning experience for the students.  Yes, I know it's hard to find time and space and what would administration think!!  But I say do what's right for kids and give them some exposure to dramatic play.
